This is true.
jonathannjackson asked: Do you have an natural talent for art? Or are you self taught? If you're self taught, how long did it take you to perfect your work?
"Talent" is a tricky concept. I have more talent than some, and much less than others. Perhaps more important than talent is time spent working - I’ve spent many, many hours drawing. I have not perfected my work. There’s always something that can be improved. The good artists I know are highly self critical - never perfect.

I spend a fair amount of time in the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, which means I draw a lot of people staring into their cell phones. They almost never notice.

Thanks very much - I will, until I can’t.
This drawing is in today’s New York Times Book Review - “Worst. Person. Ever.” by Douglas Coupland, reviewed by BJ Novak. Many thanks to my art director, Nicholas Blechman

Another glaring tumblr omission - here’s a piece I did for The New Yorker’s review of “La Divina Caricatura” (a very bizarre puppet-opera about a dog in love with her owner, directed by Lee Brueur) - this was drawn back in November and was art directed by Jordan Awan
